Extensive Newspaper Research (pre-1970s) -- State Library of NC [1 hour]

    $37.50/record

    Description

The State Library of NC has an extensive collection of NC newspapers.

    http://cinch.nclive.org/newspaper/

Newspapers in the 1700s through the mid 1900s (and later) were not organized as we are used to today. No sections for death notices, “few” headlines, “few” separation of articles, little organization, etc.

This means that if you have a date for a marriage, death, court suit or some other event that you want researched, one needs to exhaustively glance through the newspaper for such news since it could be “anywhere” and may just be a sentence in length.

Also, all communities did NOT publish their own newspapers. Based on “where” the person of interest (or court activity, crime) took place, the most appropriate “nearby” newspaper needs to be identified. Sometimes “more” than one newspaper needs to examined — based on location, the news published, was it the newspaper of record for the court or the newspaper where news of that community was published, frequency (daily vs weekly), etc there might be “options” for where the news was published.
Additionally, African-American news was often not published in so-called “white” newspapers and was limited to dedicated African-American newspapers; only a few of these were published in late 19th and early 20th century NC.

Part-hour research is possible; minimum of 1/2 hour.

    Ordering Instructions

Provide the details for the event(s), the individuals (where they normally lived — community if possible and definitely county) and anything else that might facilitate the search.

Know that I will first identify appropriate newspapers and availability before commencing such research.
Recognize that it takes “time” to request newspapers!

General Original Records Research (NC Archives, Raleigh, NC) [1 hour]

    $42.50/record

    Description

There are many original records at the NC archives, not microfilmed, not digitized, and not indexed and invaluable to your research.

This offering is for one hour of intensive research into the records of your choice -- court records (minutes, civil action papers, criminal action papers), apprentice or bastardy bonds, tax records, any colonial records, any county records, etc

I am very familiar with the extant records of NC and will look at anything that might be relevant to your research needs.

You are only billed for "on-the-clock" time on your project up to 1 hour. This usually includes a few minutes to identify relevant/extant records, associated call numbers, and putting in for the pulls [normally no more than 5-10 minutes]

    I am a listed researcher.

You will receive details of what was examined (with NC archives call numbers), what was found, or not, and then any found documents.

    Ordering Instructions

Please be specific about who, what, where and about when.

If you have specific records of interest, please list those out with ALL key details (e.g. you want a series of deeds for one person and you have the book and page). For deeds and other records, I can often handle 6-10 (or more) in an hour depending on specifics.

If your interest is more general -- be specific about what you want to know, what records you have not looked at (or want me to look at), who you are interested in, what time period, etc.

Older, handwritten documents are often only organized chronologically within a county. This requires "time" to "trawl" through records of interest. Some tax lists are organized alphabetically by 1st letter of surname and not always.

    Be specific!

    $42.50/record

    Description

Rubenstein Library (Duke University) and Wilson Library (University of North Carolina) are wonderful repositories.

They have rich collections. You can search their finding aids online. Rubenstein, http://library.duke.edu/rubenstein/ & Wilson, http://library.unc.edu/wilson/.

I am a listed researcher at both facilities.

The listed fee is for one hour of research.

I typically "hold' these projects until I have accumulated at least 3 hours of research. Typically you are billed an additional 30 minutes for admin time which includes (transit from parking lot to facility, check-in, and other related activities)

Don't want to wait (I will do within 2 weeks of engagement) -- then there is a 3 hour minimum.

You will receive details of what was examined, what was found (or not), and acquired documents via digital images (possibly through Dropbox) will be provided.

    Ordering Instructions

Diane is a very prompt researcher. I would highly recommend her for your North Carolina research and documentation.

July 2014

I had been searching for information I knew existed but after over 20 years of searching with no results, I found Diane's contact info and applied to her for help. She was honest, responded quickly and did thorough work. She documented the info totally with copies of the documents.

She did exactly as requested and went out of her way to achieve my goals. She found the records I was looking for that had been misfiled. She also found many other records that have enriched my genealogy...I could not be happier...

..Diane was very honest and did not milk the situation...she communicated well and listened well...She is very good at her work.
